Sign in once on each machine account. The agents that run on that machine use your sign-in too.
Sign in with a browser
Run this on a machine that has a browser. Give it the address of your Handsoff service:
handsoff login --server https://handsoff.run
Signed in as tFKOIqDjHhCOTfv3B6UBgbleNS7cuRuN on https://handsoff.run
The text after Signed in as is your sign-in id. Your team's sign-in page decides what it looks like.
The tool opens your browser at your team's sign-in page. Each team uses its own sign-in page, so yours may look different from anyone else's. Sign in there. The browser then shows "Sign-in received. Return to your terminal." and the tool prints the line above.
The tool prints nothing while it waits. It waits for up to five minutes. If you do nothing, it stops and tells you to run handsoff login again.
Check the address first
Before you sign in, look at the address bar. It must show your team's sign-in page, the one you normally use. Handsoff sends no sign-in code or address by email or chat. If someone sends you one, do not use it.
Sign in without a browser
Use this on a machine with no browser, or over a remote shell. Add --no-browser:
handsoff login --server https://handsoff.run --no-browser
Open this address on any device:
…
Paste the final address the browser was sent to:
Signed in as tFKOIqDjHhCOTfv3B6UBgbleNS7cuRuN on https://handsoff.run
The tool prints a long address, shown above as …. Do these steps:
- Open that address in a browser on any device, such as your phone or laptop.
- Sign in on your team's sign-in page.
- When the page finishes, copy the full address from the browser's address bar. It starts with
http://127.0.0.1:. The page itself may show an error or keep loading. That is fine. - Paste that address into the terminal and press Enter.
The address you paste holds a one-time code. Paste it only into the terminal where you ran handsoff login.
Check who you are
handsoff whoami
unknown (tFKOIqDjHhCOTfv3B6UBgbleNS7cuRuN) on https://handsoff.run
The line shows your name, your sign-in id in parentheses, and the service you are signed in to. Your name appears when your team's sign-in page sends one. When it sends none, the line starts with unknown, as here.
Run it from any other terminal on the same machine account. You do not need a browser.
If you are not signed in, handsoff whoami says this instead:
Choose a signed-in account or sign in on this machine.
sign_in_required: no single account was selected; fix: run handsoff login, or use --account <subject> when several accounts are stored
The first line is for you. The second line is for the agent or script that read it. Run handsoff login and try again.
Where your sign-in is kept
By default the tool keeps your sign-in in a private folder, ~/.config/handsoff. Only your machine account can read it. The tool never prints it.
Signing out
To remove your sign-in from this machine, run handsoff logout. It prints Signed out on this machine. Sign in again before you go on to the next page.
Next, run your first relay: open a piece of work, pass it on, and catch it.
